Finally an easy recipe to make Grilled Chicken Gyros right at home. I even include an easy-to-make Tzatziki Sauce which is a must when having Gyros. Or you can try my Homemade Tzatziki Sauce Recipe.
Before we get into the recipe, you need to make sure you pronounce “Gyro” correctly. Phonetically it is pronounced /YEE-roh/. I can’t tell you how many different ways I have heard it pronounced.
If you’ve never heard of Gyros before, it’s basically a Greek Sandwich Wrap with meat topped with Tzatziki Sauce, lettuce, onions and tomatoes.
Lamb is the most common type of meat but can also be made with beef and/or chicken.
Fun Fact
The first gyro was created by soldiers of Alexander the Great, who skewered the meat with swords and roasted it on an open flame.
Tzatziki Sauce is a delicious Middle Eastern sauce made with yogurt, cucumber with a few different kinds of herbs. I absolutely love Tzatziki Sauce.
How to Handle Raw Chicken
- Leave the chicken in the fridge until ready to use.
- Be careful of dripping juices. Clean up immediately.
- Do not wash raw chicken (prevents cross-contamination).
- Wash all utensils and cutting boards.
- I highly recommend wearing Disposable Food Safe Gloves when handling raw chicken
- If not wearing gloves, wash your hands after handling raw chicken.
The USDA recommends an internal temperature of 165°F when cooking chicken. I always use a thermometer to check the internal temperature of meats to ensure it is safe to eat.
