I was planning on grilling up some beef ribs and wanted to experiment and do something a little different for the seasoning. This rub is so good you can use it as an all purpose grilling seasoning,

Sure you can settle for some SPG (Salt, Pepper & Garlic Powder) but why not add 4 more simple ingredients and take it up a notch?

Before you apply your dry rub to your meat, make sure you pat your meat down with a paper towel to remove as much moisture as you can. Next, you need a binder to help the dry rub stick to the meat. This is optional. Many suggest you don’t need a binder but I like to use one. You can use olive oil or yellow mustard as a binder.

Once the binder has been applied to the meat, liberally apply the dry rub all over the meat. Make sure you take the proper precautions to not cross-contaminate! I suggest you use one hand to apply the dry rub and the other to rub the dry rub into the

One of the things I love about this seasoning recipe is that you are not limited to just using it beef ribs. Use it on steaks, roasts, chicken, and pork! You can also adjust the amount of each spice to your liking!

Binder or Not

Using a binder is a personal preference. I like to use one most of the time. Some claim they can taste the binder but in all my years or grilling and smoking I have never tasted the binder once the meat is done cooking. Experiment a bit and choose your preferred method.

You will need the following ingredients to make this Simple Grilling Seasoning recipe. For ingredient amounts please refer to the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Kosher Salt – regular salt is fine too
  • Chili Powder – adds a warm, smoky, and mildly spicy flavor
  • White Sugar – you can also use any sugar alternative
  • Ground Cumin – Brings a warm, earthy, and slightly nutty flavor to this recipe
  • Ground Black Pepper – Freshly Ground as much as possible
  • Garlic Powder – adds a savory, mellow, and concentrated garlic flavor
  • Ground Thyme – adds warm, earthy, and slightly minty notes

How to Make Simple Grilling Seasoning

  1. In a small mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients and mix well.
  2. Liberally apply the dry rub all over the meat.
  3. Set aside and let rest for about 30 minutes before cooking.
  4. Keep seasoning stored in an airtight container.
