This English Apple Coffee Cake is great with a cup of coffee in the morning (or tea if that's your thing). I'm not a morning person and to be honest, I don't usually eat "breakfast" but when I make this Coffee Cake, I make an exception.
I used Granny Smith apples for this recipe but depending on where you live and the season, you might be limited on what types of apples you have access to.
As long as the apples are suitable for making Apple Pie, you should be fine. Some of the more popular types of apples for this and apple pie recipes would Golden Delicious, Fuji, Gala, Northern Spy, and Jonagold.
And don't just limit yourself to eating this in the morning. This apple coffee cake is so good you can eat it for dessert!
When checking the cake for doneness with a toothpick, make sure you check in several different locations as you may get a false reading if your toothpick happens to hit an apple.
For the baking dish, I recommend a 9-inch square dish. I usually use a ceramic baking dish when I make this coffee cake and it usually takes a solid 55 minutes to cook.

Do you spray the baking pan
Chef Rodney
I bake this coffee cake at 350°F. I updated the recipe card to reflect this. The recipe card shows 6 tablespoons of butter for the topping. I would suggest using a bit of non-stick spray if using a glass baking dish but not really necessary if you are using a non-stick pan. Thanks.
