monte cristo sliders

I love a good Monte Cristo Sandwich. As I was having a few guests over, I decided it would be easier to make sliders instead of individual sandwiches.

If you’ve never heard of Monte Cristos, it’s basically a ham, turkey and cheese sandwich dipped in beaten eggs and grilled or fried until golden brown.

It is then served sprinkled with powdered sugar and often with a side of jam or preserves for dipping.

I decided to bake these Monte Cristo sliders instead of frying them. Since all the buns need to remain attached I figured it would be easier this way.

As I mentioned above, a Monte Cristo is typically served with powdered sugar and a side of berry preserves. If that seems a little much, you can skip that part but you have no idea what you would be missing!

You will need the following ingredients to make this Monte Cristo Sliders recipe. For ingredient amounts please refer to the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Hawaiian Buns – or any slider bun
  • Black Forest Ham – regular ham will work as well
  • Deli Turkey – always use a good quality deli meat (real turkey vs processed)
  • Swiss Cheese – typically used in Monte Cristos but you can use any cheese you prefer
  • Dijon Mustard – you can also use spicy brown mustard or yellow mustard
  • Egg – used as an egg wash to help brown and crisp the bun tops
  • Unsalted Butter – you can use regular salted butter if you prefer
  • Powdered Sugar – optional but is almost always used for Monte Cristos
  • Strawberry Preserves – optional, any berry preserves will work
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 9 x 13 baking dish. Set aside.
  2. Cut the Buns horizontally (do not pull apart the buns) to create a top and bottom. Put the bottoms of the buns on the baking sheet.
  3. Spread a layer of Dijon mustard on the top and bottom layers.

  6. Cover loosely with foil and bake for 15 minutes. Remove the foil and continue to bake for another 10 minutes or until the tops are nice and golden brown and the cheese has melted.
  7. Let the sliders cool slightly, then cut the sliders apart with a sharp knife.
  8. Optionally sprinkle with some powdered sugar, and serve hot with berry preserves on the side.

So tasty and the Dijon mustard gives them a great flavour. They were a big hit with the family.
