With four different kinds of cheese, how can you go wrong? Especially when the cheese is ooey-gooey between two pieces of sourdough bread.

You don’t have to use Sourdough Bread but it’s one of my favorite for making grilled cheese. But to each their own.

gruyere cheese

Gruyère Cheese can be pretty pricey depending on where you live. If you don’t want to spend the money for just this grilled cheese recipe you can substitute for a different kind of cheese.

Just make sure it’s a good melting cheese. Did you know you can buy white cheddar and gruyère cheese slices? A good option for this grilled cheese recipe.

The quantity of cheese I list on the recipe card below is when using sourdough bread. If you decide to use a smaller slice of bread like Texas Toast, you may want to consider cutting back on the cheese as the slices are typically smaller than slices of sourdough bread.

grilled cheese on hot skillet

For as long as I can remember I’ve always used butter when making grilled cheese sandwiches. Come to find out my wife uses mayonnaise instead of butter.

Apparently, her mom made them that way when she was a child so she did the same. I’ve tried both and personally can’t tell the difference between the two.
