cheeseburger stromboli

It’s been a while since I’ve made a stromboli and wanted something different (as usual). I’ve made cheeseburger inspired dishes before so why not try and make a Cheeseburger Stromboli?

If you’ve made stromboli before you know how easy it is to make. You usually make your filling first then roll it in dough before sticking it in the oven to bake until Golden Brown and Delicious.

cheeseburger stromboli

Just like a classic cheeseburger, this stromboli has exactly what you would expect: beef, ketchup, mustard, dill pickles and cheese.

And just like when making yourself a cheeseburger, you can easily tweak this stromboli recipe to your liking. I kept it pretty basic on purpose so you can see how easy it is to make.

I like to use the refrigerated pizza dough in a tube for convenience but feel free to use any kind of pizza dough you want. Just make sure you can roll it into a shape that works for you. And hey, why not try whole wheat or gluten-free pizza dough? It won’t make a difference in this recipe at all!

What is a Stromboli

What exactly is a stromboli? Well the simplest way to describe it is like a pizza rolled up like a burrito. It’s got all the good stuff—cheese, sauce, and meats like pepperoni or sausage—wrapped in dough, baked until it’s crispy on the outside and melty on the inside. Think of it as a pizza pocket, but way better and way bigger!

You will need the following ingredients to make this Cheeseburger Stromboli recipe. For ingredient amounts please refer to the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Lean Ground Beef – as lean as possible to limit the amount of grease
  • Sweet Onion – you can also use some diced yellow onion
  • Sweet Relish – you can also use some dill relish or chopped up pickles
  • Garlic Cloves – use more or less to taste or leave the garlic out completely
  • Dijon Mustard – you can substitute for regular yellow mustard or even some spicy brown mustard
  • Ketchup – I personally only use Heinz but you can use whatever brand you want
  • Refrigerated Pizza Dough – easier to roll out if you let it sit at room temperature for a bit
  • Shredded Cheese – use your favorite type of cheese like cheddar or colby jack
  • Egg White – or use the whole egg and add a tablespoon of water to make the egg wash
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a baking sheet. Set aside.
  2. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and onion over medium heat until the meat is no longer pink.

  7. Starting on one side, carefully roll the dough up like a jelly roll. Slide the stromboli to the middle of the baking sheet so that the seam is on the bottom.
  8. Bring long sides of dough to the center over filling pinching the seams to seal.
  9. Stretch and tuck the ends under the stromboli. Apply the egg wash to the outside of the dough. Cut several diagonal slits into the top of the dough.
