This Copycat recipe of KFC’s Coleslaw. A great side dish for those summer BBQ’s with the family. A super easy slaw recipe.
I remember it like it was yesterday. My dad getting a bucket of KFC chicken for dinner. My brother and I always thought it was cool that we were eating dinner out of a bucket. What I don’t recall is ever having their coleslaw.
My first recollection of having their coleslaw was in my teens. Since I mostly cook our meals and rarely do takeout, I will admit I have not enjoyed KFC coleslaw very often, so I just had to make this Copycat KFC Coleslaw.
Fast forward to today. I’ve been on a kick to find “copycat” recipes and see if they are really as good as the restaurants they come from.
I have to assume that everyone has eaten at KFC at least once in their life but if KFC is foreign to you, make sure you check out their website.
While this coleslaw is super easy to make, it does need to rest in the fridge at least 4 hours preferably overnight. This will give everything a chance to meld together. It is well worth the wait!
If you prefer to make your own coleslaw mix, just add some cabbage and carrots to your food processor and pulse until you reach the desired consistency.
Buttermilk Substitution
If you don’t have Buttermilk on hand, you can use this trick as a substitute: Add one tablespoon of lemon juice to a measuring cup. Add milk and fill to the 1 cup measurement line. Stir the mixture together and let sit for 5 minutes. Since this recipe calls for 1/2 cup you will need to adjust accordingly.
Another option is to use a cultured buttermilk blend. All you need to do is add water. I was very skeptical at first but in a pinch it works great!

Copycat Rating
Since the goal of a Copycat Recipe is for it to taste exactly like the original, it’s only natural to rate this recipe against the original. This Copycat recipe rates a solid 9 out of 10 in my opinion.

This coleslaw tastes exactly like the real thing. My favorite part of going to KFC. Besides their chicken, this coleslaw is the best.
