George’s Buttermilk Pie recipe has been a tradition in our family for decades. Super easy to make with one of the most unique flavors!
My wife’s Grandpa George used to make this Buttermilk Pie all the time during the Holidays. I had never heard of this pie before and I love to make old family recipes so I just had to try George’s Buttermilk Pie.
My first reaction was what does it taste like? Looking at the recipe I figured it would be a custard kind of pie like my Cinnamon Sugar Cream Pie. Well I was close.
The filling is just like a custard, not too stiff and not too runny. As far as the flavor goes, it has a bit of a sour taste to it thanks to the buttermilk but not terribly sweet with just a hint of nutmeg.
For the pie crust, I used the deep dish variety. When I poured the buttermilk mixture into the prepared pie shell it filled it to the top. You need to be mindful of that when shopping for a pie crust.
Buttermilk Substitution
If you don’t have Buttermilk on hand, you can use this trick as a substitute: Add one tablespoon of lemon juice to a measuring cup. Add milk and fill to the 1 cup measurement line. Stir the mixture together and let sit for 5 minutes.
Another option is to use a cultured buttermilk blend. All you need to do is add water. I was very skeptical at first but in a pinch it works great!

You can either eat it plain as I do or with a dollop of whipped cream or even with a berry topping like blueberries or strawberries. Apparently making this buttermilk pie with pecans is another popular version of this old school recipe.

This buttermilk pie was really tasty. Just like a custard pie. The nutmeg gives this pie a sweet but not too sweet taste.
