The family was in the mood for some chicken tenders and french fries and was tired of the same ole dipping sauces I usually make so decided to try and replicate the classic Mississippi Comeback sauce.

What I love about these kinds of recipes is that I can whip it together in 5 minutes about 1 hour before dinner is served. It will probably take you longer to gather all the ingredients than to make it.

If you have made Mississippi Comeback sauce before you will notice this recipe is a little different. I decided to put my spin on it. May not be for everyone but as they say, don’t knock it till you try it!

If you’re wondering why it’s called Mississippi Comeback sauce, the story goes that it was first created at a restaurant in Mississippi. But the real reason? The sauce is so delicious that customers just keep ‘coming back’ for more!

This dipping sauce is perfect for french fries, chicken tenders, fried shrimp, or even vegetables like fried pickles or onion rings.

But did you know it can also be used as a sandwich spread, salad dressing or to drizzle over fried meats or vegetables? No matter how you decide to use it, I am sure you will love this sauce!

What Does it Taste Like

If you’ve never had the chance to try comeback sauce and are curious about what it tastes like, think of it as a Southern twist on Thousand Island dressing.

Equipment Needed

Equipment can have a big impact on how a recipe turns out. Below are some of my favorite pieces of equipment that I use when making this recipe.

You will need the following ingredients to make this Mississippi Comeback Sauce recipe. For ingredient amounts please refer to the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Mayonnaise – the base of the sauce
  • Ketchup – Adds sweetness and tang
  • Chili Sauce – this gives it a bit more sweetness and tang than ketchup alone
  • Dijon Mustard – for a slightly sharper, more refined mustard flavor
  • Onion Powder – adds a mild onion flavor
  • Garlic Powder – gives the sauce a sharp, pungent flavor
  • Worcestershire Sauce – adds a savory, umami element
  • Ground Black Pepper – for seasoning
  • Tabasco Sauce – or any other hot sauce to give it a spicy kick
  • Olive Oil – adds some richness and gives it a smooth texture
  • Fresh Lemon Juice – Adds acidity and freshness
  1. Combine all the ingredients in a mixing bowl.
  2. Let the sauce sit for at least 1 hour in the refrigerator. This will allow all the flavors to meld. You can use it immediately, but the longer you let it sit in the refrigerator, the more flavorful it will be.
