green bean casserole

For those unfamiliar, Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving much like Americans, but with a few key differences.

The menu varies between the two countries. While Turkey, stuffing, Mashed Potatoes, and Gravy are staples in both, Canadians often include regional specialties like roasted Ham, Salmon, and Butter tarts. On the American table, you’ll typically find turkey alongside Cranberry Sauce, Sweet Potatoes, Green Bean Casserole, and Pumpkin Pie for dessert.

Another distinction is the date: Canadian Thanksgiving is observed on the second Monday of October, while American Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November.

green bean casserole

Growing up I was not a fan of green beans (and wax beans) so it wasn’t until much later in life that I had the opportunity to taste a green bean casserole. While it wasn’t terrible, I kept going back for more of my Sweet Potato Casserole.

That being said, I am usually the one hosting Thanksgiving every year so I make this Green Bean Casserole for my guests. As you would expect, this recipe is super easy to make in your slow cooker.

Tips

  • Try to resist as much as possible the temptation to open the lid while it’s cooking as the slow cooker loses heat. Just opening the lid to stir the contents can make the internal temperature drop by 10°F to 15°F.
